3 Tips to help you lead in uncertain times

A quick thought…

Undoubtedly, we’re living in some troubling times, and I’ve been helping many leaders manage the chaos recently. I like to tell them chaos is the perfect time for leaders to rise above and show their capabilities. After all, leaders thrive

in uncertainty.

in chaos.

in times of turmoil.

These are the proving grounds for leaders. This week, I wanted to send you a quick email to help you think about your leadership trials, offer advice on leading through uncertainty, and hopefully encourage you to keep going! So, to help you, I’ve curated my top 3 tips for leading in uncertain times.

3 Tips to Thrive in Uncertainty

We all face it, and how we react will shape our future. The common bond all great leaders share is their ability to withstand chaos and thrive in uncertainty. I wanted to share a few quick tips to help you manage uncertainty more effectively.

  1. Focus on what you can control. Don’t catastrophize and play the what-if scenario game. Understand what you can control and focus your effort on that. As leaders, we often complain about our situation, failing to realize we could adapt quickly by changing things within our control.

  2. Prioritize Psychological safety and well-being. Not everyone may have the same resolve as you, but you must lead them. Leaders provide a barrier to keep out the chaos and uncertainty. They allow their people to work effectively without being hindered by the external environment. Protecting your people is the best way to give them the safety they need to deliver their best work.

  3. Provide transparency. Perhaps the most important on the list is your ability not to ignore the situation but frame it in a way that leads to positive feelings and motivation toward the work at hand. When you have a clear plan to put effort into controllable activities and create an environment that shelters your people from chaos, you can provide transparent communication without feeling helpless. It’s not about ignoring the uncertainty but framing the opportunity it offers to show how you’ll survive and thrive through the uncertainty.

Anyway, just a short little note today that I hope you can find some value in.

See ya next week!
